Since 2012 Speak With Purpose has integrated public speaking, writing, and performance art for the purpose of re-engaging scholars in their academic goals, decreasing absenteeism, and teaching youth to advocate for themselves. Many of our young scholars have been negatively impacted by historically oppressive structures and practices, particularly within the school system. Speak With Purpose is reimagining classroom learning, collaborating with teachers to provide students with learning experiences that spark their intellect and imagination, affirm and expand their knowledge and experiences, and put their agency into practice.
Speak With Purpose is the only public speaking program statewide that is incorporated into the school day with the aim of integrating arts education and student voice to develop independent learners with self-authored identities. SWP adapts to the needs of each student by training diverse educator/innovators to co-teach alongside classroom teachers, where they implement a culturally responsive and relevant project-based learning (PBL) curriculum. Our goal is to reimagine classroom learning by collaborating with teachers and students to guide their education using student agency, collectivism, and voice to nurture brilliance, imagination, and leadership. Our performance-based educational strategies are anchored in the use of writing to empower participants to present ideas that reflect their clear, passionate, and distinctive perspectives of the world. These narratives combat silence to promote literacy and racial inclusion— which are critical for disrupting the school-to-prison pipeline and provide guides and standards for students of all ages.
Role Responsibilities:
SWP Growth Development Manager
Position at a Glance
Speak with Purpose (SWP), formerly known as We.APP (We Act. Present. Perform.), is the only youth public speaking program in Washington State. We partner with many Seattle and Renton Public Schools, primarily grades 4-6, with a special focus on Title 1 schools and the BIPOC community. Our Educator Innovators (Teaching Artists) incorporate our dynamic curriculum into the school day to help students develop their voices as independent learners with self-authored identities. We want to inspire every child who is silent in the back of the classroom to step forward and become a leader in the front.
Position Summary
Our growing nonprofit seeks a Growth Development Manager who is enthusiastic about building a fundraising community from an early stage. SWP is committed to approaching fundraising from a community-centric lens and bringing racial equity into all partnerships and conversations. An ideal candidate views this role from a servant leadership perspective, teaching and bringing other leaders and team members along as a critical part of the practice.
SWP has steadily grown private and public philanthropic revenue over the last five years. As SWP seeks to scale its work and advance its mission, the Growth Development Manager will support strategic planning and lead the daily implementation of a community-centric fundraising program including annual fund, major, institutional, and government support, and special events including Rising Voices, our annual end-of-year student celebration that attracts more than 500 attendees each year.
The Growth Development Manager will work to ensure that community members such as SWP alumni, donors, parents, and school partners have access to volunteer opportunities and ways to provide in-kind donations. We fully recognize that not all gifts are monetary and want to encourage family engagement without creating a barrier to access.
