Job Purpose

Manages the development and implementation of environmental health and safety programs for the Richmond KY facility. Maintains compliance with Federal, State, Local and Corporate regulatory requirements. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops a comprehensive Safety program focused on behavior-based initiatives. Efforts are made to implement a “Zero Potential” philosophy across the operation (i.e. proactive approach vs. a reactive approach).
  • Responsible for hazardous waste management activities including: registration, identification, transportation, disposal, internal audits, Transport, Storage, Disposal Facility audits, training. Overall responsibility to assure that the Richmond facility is in compliance with all environmental requirements. 
  • Submits required reports to regulatory agencies. Maintains all related records and documentation. Interact both verbally and in writing with the agencies on a regular (sometimes daily) basis. Documents all contacts with agencies. Communicates all interactions with regulatory agencies to Corporate EHS personnel. Ensures all documentation submitted is vetted by the Legal Dept. as directed by Corporate EHS.
  • Maintains current knowledge of regulatory environment through attendance at workshops and seminars and the review of The Code of Federal Regulations, The Federal Register, The Code of State Regulations, City Code, trade publications, and other literature.
  • Develops plant manufacturing environmental operating procedures to maintain compliance with laws, rules, and regulations. Recommends course of action and develop procedures for compliance with new and revised laws, rules, and regulations. Leads and coordinates efforts to implement environmental controls designed to prevent emission occurrences.
  • Evaluates all new and existing pollution control equipment requirements. Develops specifications and recommends improvements and changes as required. Completes and submits environmental permits to regulatory agencies as required.
  • Works with plant facility maintenance personnel to ensure emission control and treatment systems operate as designed and coordinates corrective measures when issues are found.
  • Responsible for ensuring required environmental monitoring and sampling is conducted in compliance with regulatory standards. Coordinates major environmental monitoring projects.
  • Researches and documents compliance with customer required environmental specifications.
  • Acts as the plant liaison with the local community, regulatory agencies, and other outside agencies involving environmental issues. Facility representative to the Local Emergency Planning Agencies. Attends scheduled meetings. Acts as the plant's primary emergency coordinator.
  • Supports efforts related to EOS from an EHS point of view.
  • Reviews all capital investments prior to submittal to ensure EHS items are taken into consideration and addressed. 
  • Ability to oversee Capital Projects specifically related to EHS from a “cradle to grave” perspective under the guidelines for CAPEX spending dictated by the company. 
  • Coordinates an approved vendor list for on-site work and maintains records of compliance with the EnerSys Contractor Policy.
  • Coordinates a system to ensure all new / modified equipment and processes are reviewed for Safety features and protocol prior to use in Mass Production.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience: Requires a Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution in Engineering or Technology and five years’ experience in managing environmental and health and safety compliance in a manufacturing environment. Specifically:

  • Managing environmental compliance in a manufacturing environment. Experience must include maintaining a professional successful relationship with regulatory agencies and agency representatives.
  • Demonstrated expertise in both knowledge and application of EPA, DOT, and OSHA regulations. 
  • Successful experience in preparing and submitting permits, compliance reports, and corporate reports.

 
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Engineering or Technology and 10 years of progressively more responsible Environmental Health and Safety management position in a lead acid battery manufacturing facility.
